Infra Ghosts is a series of works by artist Hugh Davis that explore the duality of existence.
In the first instance, the works exist as traditional paintings, in oil and pigment, mounted and framed on the gallery wall. However, when these paintings are reflected via a digital projector – through a form of lo-fi augmented reality using light emitting diodes – they expand to reveal a more complex and involved image. The works generate infrared light just outside the human visible spectrum that can be technologically translated. In so doing, Hugh explores the complex relationship between existence and our ability to comprehend that which lies outside the physical limits of our perception.
Thanks.
Hugh Davis, born 1985, is a Melbourne based artist whose work deals with a personal relationship and respect for technology that simultaneously disregards technology’s perceived aura. In 2002 he formed the Dirty Mits, a Punk band that would last five years and tour internationally. In creating the group’s persona and imagery, Hugh honed a DIY ethic to image and sound creation that would extend into his approach towards media, technology and the arts. He completed a BA (Multimedia) with honours in 2005 and explored community radio, television, animation, publishing, music and design before focusing on his artistic practice in 2008. In 2011, Hugh completed the Master of Visual Arts at the VCA, and had his first solo show September 2011 at Bus Projects.
